GRAD 999 is a special registration option intended for graduate students in the final stages of their degree program. Master’s students may register for it once (for one semester) and doctoral students may register for it twice (for one semester each time).
Typically GRAD 999 permission requests are only considered if you meet ALL of the following:
You are an active student in a Family Social Science M.A., M.Ed., or Ph.D. program;
You have taken all required coursework, including thesis credits (if applicable), but have not yet finished the thesis; and
You have not exceeded the number of times you are allowed to take GRAD 999 per FSoS policy.
In order to receive permission to register for GRAD 999, please submit this form. The form requires you to explain each semester’s circumstances which necessitate GRAD 999 registration.
Procedure
Consult with your faculty advisor and discuss the circumstances and the proposed timeline for the request. Your advisor’s approval is required before submitting the request.
Attach a one-page written statement (as a PDF) and any additional documentation explaining your reason for requesting GRAD 999. Your statement should include a very specific timeline that shows how you intend to complete your outstanding degree requirements within one or two semesters.
Submit this form no later than three weeks prior to the first day of the semester for which you are requesting GRAD 999 enrollment.
The request will be forwarded to your advisor for approval.
After your request is approved by your advisor, the GPC will review the request and consult with the DGS as needed, then inform you about the outcome and/or request further information.
Note to student:
GRAD 999 is a zero-credit course that allows students to maintain active status in their program. However, students must be aware that it may have other implications for them. Please carefully read the information on GRAD 999 at Special Registration Categories for Graduate Professional Students prior to requesting permission to enroll.International students requesting to take GRAD 999 should consult with ISSS prior to submitting this form.
GRAD 999 registration is not guaranteed in a given semester until the GPC/DGS has approved. Please plan accordingly as the review process can take up to two weeks from the time of submission; late registration fees will be charged if you have not registered by the first day of classes.
Note to Faculty Advisor
REVIEW ANY ATTACHMENTS –INCLUDING THE STUDENT’S TIMELINE—BEFORE APPROVING THE REQUEST.
You are verifying that this plan is realistic and is the best way this student can complete the degree or maintain their active status.
Keep in mind that although this course option is tuition-free to students, the College is charged for each student who takes GRAD 999.
