Directed research and independent study
All doctoral students are expected to develop competencies in planning, analyzing, conducting, and reporting research by participating in one or more research projects throughout their program of graduate study. Students are encouraged to work with several faculty members during the duration of their graduate study and can receive research credits by enrolling in FSoS 8794 Directed Research. Consent of the specific faculty member involved is required. Students must complete a Contract for Directed Research.
Students may also complete an Independent Study with faculty (FSoS 5193 or 8193) for outreach and engagement scholarship, teaching scholarship, participating in a reading group, or any other work that is outside the scope of research. Students must complete a Contract for Independent Study.
Students must register for a grade (A-F) in order for Directed Research or Independent Study credits to count towards the degree plan.
