Process for transitioning to PhD program

Transitioning to the PhD program

Students entering with a bachelor's degree will be expected to fulfill the requirements for a master's degree in the process of working toward the doctoral degree. However, admittance into the MA/PhD program does not guarantee automatic progression into the doctoral degree.

During the semester the student is planning to defend and submit the master’s thesis, they will be expected to submit an online application, as well as identify their advisor for the PhD program. Students should consult with the Graduate Program Coordinator for specific instructions regarding the application process.

Department faculty will make the decision to approve or not approve the student’s continuation into the PhD program based on the student's demonstrated skills, timely progress within the master's degree, and overall fit within the doctoral program.

If admitted to the PhD program, students should see the PhD section of the graduate handbook.
