Maintaining active status is required in order to participate in the University community as a Graduate School student. Participating in the University community includes registering for coursework, taking examinations, submitting milestone forms, and filing for graduation. Students not registered every fall and spring term are considered to have withdrawn; their Graduate School records are deactivated. Those who wish to resume graduate work must reapply and be readmitted to reactivate their status.

Family Social Science Ph.D. students may apply to take early dissertation thesis credits (FSoS 8888) by completing the Early Dissertation Thesis Credit Registration Request form, prior to passing their preliminary oral examination, under the following conditions:
1. Ph.D. students may register for up to 6 dissertation thesis credits prior to passing the preliminary oral examination if:
a. the advisor determines the student is research ready, and
b. the PhD checklist has been submitted and approved, and
c. the student submitted and received advisor approval on the Early Dissertation Thesis Credit Registration Request form.
Note:
Students will register for the remaining dissertation thesis credits after passing the preliminary oral exam.
Permission to enroll in dissertation thesis credits does not guarantee advancement to Ph.D. candidacy.
2. If a student passes the preliminary oral exam within the first two weeks of any semester, permission to register for dissertation thesis credits (FSoS 8888) for that term will be granted.
Note:
Students may register for dissertation thesis credits the semester after they pass their preliminary oral examination without special approval.
